The Harry Potter Alliance is a nonprofit organization run by fans of the Harry Potter series. The organization is dedicated to uniting fans of the Harry Potter series and other popular books and series to draw attention to important issues – among them Human Rights, Literacy, Education, and Gay Rights – and mobilize support.
The Harry Potter Alliance is an example of the power of literature – it is a force that can go beyond the pages of a book to inspire people to do great things. JK Rowling has said of the organization: "It's incredible, it's humbling, and it's uplifting to see people going out there and doing that in the name of your character."
Their Mission Statement states that they are a “nonprofit that takes an outside-of-the-box approach to civic engagement by using parallels from the Harry Potter books to educate and mobilize young people across the world toward issues of literacy, equality, and human rights… Our goal is to make civic engagement exciting by channeling the entertainment-saturated facets of our culture toward mobilization for deep and lasting social change.”
Not In Harry’s Name
The cocoa plant industry is one of the most corrupt in the world. Not In Harry’s Name is a campaign committed to making sure that all chocolate used by Warner Bros. studio for their Harry Potter merchandise doesn’t use child slavery and is compliant with Warner Bros. ethical source guidelines. And even though Warner Bros. has said that their satisfied with the source of their chocolate, a report has come out that gives Harry Potter chocolate an “F” in human rights. As part of the campaign, the HP Alliance are petitioning to have Warner Bros. be transparent about where Harry Potter chocolate comes from. You can add your name to the list by going to ShowUsTheReport.com.
To set an example, The Harry Potter Alliance created their own Certified Fair Trade Chocolate Frogs. Not only was the chocolate Certified Fair Trade, they also included collectible illustrated Wizard Cards. The idea was that if the Harry Potter Alliance can produce Fair Trade chocolate, than Warner Bros. should be able to as well.
Odds In Our Favor
Odds In Our Favor is a campaign to use the Hunger Games series as a platform to discuss economic inequality. The campaign feels that instead of using the series to establish dialogue and draw comparisons between the series and our own economic inequality, the series has been used to sell makeup and fast food. So, they’re taking back the narrative and using an online marketing campaign to flood every Hunger Games advertisement with information about economic inequality and links to resources where people can find more information about our “real-world districts.”
